When the audio creative process and participant engagement both feel collaborative

You can be at your best when an Audio Professional collaborating on your project genuinely understands and believes in a participatory approach. The participants are at their best too.Meaningful rapport happens. It facilitates the communication of everyone’s truth. It creates compelling results that give the project the best chance of capturing the attention of others to inspire change. All the project team having a participant led approach in common makes the process more fulfilling.I would like to give you something.I’m interested in giving you the same thing you want for your participants. A flexible and inclusive approach. Where your ideas are listened to, supported and challenged throughout the work. Creating something everyone is proud of through a collaborative effort.Plans providing an outline and decisions to progress the work are important. I also like that an idea inspires more ideas. Not everything can be pre planned. I enjoy that.

Loan Shark Awareness Project

Paul approached working with the young people in our centre in a cool and fresh way. From the first workshop, he got them onboard quickly. They felt like they got to know him quite easy and were interested in getting deeper into the subject of raising awareness around the dangers of Loan Sharks. It was an exciting project.

Loan Shark Awareness Project

Paul’s engagement with the young people was exceptional and all young people engaged well each session. The enthusiasm from Paul made each session easy and successful.I was impressed by the creativity and how the small videos became something much more than myself and the young people thought. It brought out a powerful message.Thank you Paul for leading on our Loan Shark project at The Hangout Youth Club.

Different skills with something in common - being participant led

My entry point to working with social issues comes from working with young people in the charity sector for 20 years, ranging from direct delivery to senior leadership roles. Here’s a TEDx talk I did in 2019 talking about the lesson's I've learned from youth work which informs my approach.

HEAR IT FOR YOURSELF

I’ve been making music and producing audio for as long as I’ve been working in the charity sector. 20 years. All music is made from scratch in my home studio. I play multiple instruments: bass guitar, guitar and keys. Along with my microphones and percussion, I do everything else through various production software. For Interviews and Podcasting, I have equipment to do it for you or can provide guidance and training on what equipment you can buy for your own set up.Here’s some examples of my work.

covid realities

Covid Realities was a research project which looked into the experiences of parents and carers on low incomes during the pandemic.6 animated videos were made with project participants, creative partners and funders to capture their thoughts on the project.I delivered an online workshop to capture the participants ideas and then made music for each piece to support their narrative. The researchers recorded discussions with the participants via Zoom and I mixed this with the music.

BAMP podcast

BAMP is a group of older women youth and community workers aiming to inform youth work of the future by producing podcasts that capture stories from practice in an entertaining and accessible way.I've been involved in this project from the beginning which has included providing consultancy on recording equipment, composing a theme tune, and recording and editing the episodes. The BAMP Logo is designed by Polly Playford. The red tree

Composed music for a commission with the Royal Exchange Theatre. Theatre piece explored mental health with children aged 10 and under.I collaborated with artists to create an interactive play, fusing together performance, live illustration, puppetry and music for children aged 10 and under. The story consisted of emotions that were personified with monsters: embarrassment, loss and shame. I created music to represent these emotions.Play was performed at the Royal Exchange

Project Fear

Project Fear is an exploration of personalities, withholding the truth, phobias and fears told through dark comedy.I worked collaboratively with the youth theatre group over a number of rehearsal sessions to understand how the young people wanted their show to sound.I composed original music for this play. It was performed at M6 Theatre
